Ask a Pro
Holly LyonsOver here at Cool Girls Decks, we have been receiving a lot of e-mails from many of you with questions regarding tricks, boys, and skate park etiquette. We try to answer them they best way we can, but we really think the answers should be coming from a pro. That's why we asked our Cool Girl Decks' team pro, Miss Holly Lyons, to answer your questions directly.

When we asked Holly if she would be up for it, she wrote back, "I would be stoked to answer questions that girls have for your web site. I think it's really important to inspire as many girls and even boys out there in skateboarding and in life. I am always so inspired by others all the time. That's how we all learn and grow."

Holly is one of our most favorite skaters and we're so happy that she has agreed to answer your questions. So feel free to ask her anything, and she'll answer all of your questions in her own special way.

What is your questions for, Holly Lyons?

Jessica
13/ Tyler, Texas

Answer:
Hi Jessica,

I actually made a video this summer and you can get it for free.

It teaches you about starting, stopping and more basics of skateboarding.

Have fun and be safe!

Holly

Question:
Hi Holly,

I've had my board for around 3 or 4 years, but I've not been able to do much more than just ride. I would really love to learn tricks, but I'm the only girl around my town interested in skating, and the guys in my neighborhood won't let me hang with them. What do I need to do to get better if I can't get any help from the guys around here?

Christian
14/ McLeansville, North Carolina

Answer:
Hi Christian,

Well, you can learn from watching others skate.  Watch videos, or see if there are any skateboard lessons in your town.  I know the feeling because I was just like you. The only girl that wanted to skate.  You just have to be strong and skate for yourself.  Look on-line for some instructional videos they will help a lot.  And maybe see if other girls in your town want to learn with you.  There may be nobody now, but just stay positive and I'm sure good things will happen for you!

Good luck and don't give up,
Holly

Question:
I want to start skating. What kind of board should I start out with? Also how should I learn? My boyfriend said he could teach me but we don’t live anywhere near a skatepark?

Kelsey
13/ Ohio

Answer:
Hi Kelsey,

We have great boards here at coolgirldecks.com.  Since you are

13, I would say a board that is 7.5 inches wide is good.

I actually made a FREE learn to skateboard video that you can get on-line at:  www.learntorideaskateboard.com

It is all about the basics.  After you know the basics, there are lots of other instructional videos out there, just look on-line and it doesn't matter if there's a skate park around.  You can learn at a school, parking lots, street, etc.  Learning with your boyfriend can be a lot of fun too and a great way to bond!!

Have fun,
Holly

Question:
Hey Holly,

I have been skating for less than a month I can do the basics shifting weight, ollie ect… I can do an ollie and I really want to do it while moving on my board and I'm kind of scared should I feel this way or am I too much of a sissy?

Thanks,
Kim
12/ V.T.

Answer:
Hi Kim,

No, you are not a sissy.  Skateboarding isn't easy; it takes a lot of time and patience.  It's natural to be scared.  Just keep trying and the more you do it, the less scared you will be. Before you know if you will ollieing.

Have fun and stick with it!

Holly

Question:
Hey Holly,

I am one of two girls that actually skateboard in my city. I just graduated from high school and am planning to study business in college because I want to open an indoor skatepark/ shop. Do u think I will get any respect in this male dominated business?  Skateboarding is my passion and I really want to peruse this venture but I'm not sure the skateboard community will take to me well.

Kara Ellis
17/ Washington D.C.

Answer:
Hi Kara,

Well, you will never know until you try.  Also, if you have a passion for skating then that's what you are supposed to do.  Just do it. Who cares what other people think.  No matter what in life, some people will like you, and some people will not.  Therefore, you have to live your life for you and not for anybody else.  Go for it and keep me informed!!

Best wishes,
Holly

Question:

Question:
I want to be a better skater can u teach me how to do the kick flip

Hardcore Architects-
16/ Philippines

Answer:
Hi,

Here is a step by step about how to do a kick flip.  Skateboarding takes time and lots of practice, so stick with it and have fun!

Holly

1) Start with your back foot on the tail and your front foot right under the bolts. Your front foot should be slanted just a little.

2) Bend your knees and pop your board.

3) Flick your front foot off the tip of the nose making it flip.

4) Suck up your legs for the catch. Try and keep your feet over the bolts.

5) Land and absorb the shock and roll away.

Question:
My new boyfriend and my ex are both skaters and i'm kinda new at it but I need a new board cuz I broke mine have any suggestions?

Jenni
13/  Indiana

Answer:
Hi Jenni,

Yeah, we have the best skateboards for girls at coolgirldecks.com

Check them out!!  They are super cool and the only skateboards I will ride!

Holly

Question:
Hi ya Holly!

I love your style with skateboarding and your website "coolgirls" is really stylish!

When I was 13 I started with skateboarding. Now I'm 14 years old and I can pool skate en riding of the most of the banks. I hope I can be a really good skateboarder.

Now my question…I really want to learn some tricks in the pool.  But I don't now how I can do that. And sometimes I'm scared to  fall, because a half-year ago I've broke my arm.

xx, Baudien
14/ the Netherlands

Answer:
Hi Baudien,

Thanks for the compliment!

Well in skateboarding you will fall and even the best skaters get hurt.  It's just part of it all.  You have to just let it go and move on.  You will probably get hurt again, but you can get hurt tripping on something on the ground.  You can get hurt just sitting there and doing nothing.  You just have to go for it and have fun.  Life is

short!  Skate because you love it and you will never go wrong.  The more you keep skating the more comfortable you will feel, and you will build up your confidence and progress.  You are young, so you

have lots of time to get better and be your best!  :-)

Good luck and have FUN!!!

Holly

Question:

Question:
Hey Holly, my name is Dilan Earwood I am a really good skater and used to be able to do a kickflip I can fake try but I cant even kickflip any more. My problem is I put my front foot down on the board when I flip it and my back foot on the ground. Can you tell me how to fix that, and what to do I want to be able to do one in the next 3 days so please help. What do I do???

Dilan E.
12/ Corpus Christi, TX

Answer:
Hi Dilan,

Here is a step by step on how to do a kickflip.  Good luck, and remember practice, practice, practice!!  Everybody learns in a different amount of time, but since you have done it, it is in you, just pull it out!

Have fun,

Question:
Holly I have skated for about 2 years and can do tricks such as nollie heelflips and nollie varialflips, and I can almost tre-flip. I really want to get sponsored, and I heard that it is easier to get sponsored if you are a girl, but I am not sure if I am good enough. Also I am going to Woodward West for the girls’ rule week, and do you think I could get sponsored there. P.S. you are a great skater and should consider teaching at Woodward for the all girls week.

Taylor
13/ Southern California

Answer:
Hi Taylor,

Thanks for your nice words!  If you can do those tricks, I suggest putting together a "Sponsor Me" video and sending it to the companies you want to be sponsored by.  Call the company and find out who their team manager is.  After you send the video, call back and see what the person thinks.  That is a great place to start, and if you have done any contests, let them know and that helps too.

Woodward is a great camp, and you should definitely talk to the people there about sponsorship too.  I'm sure something great will happen for you!

Holly

Question:
Hey Holly. I have been skating for about 2 months and can kick turn and carve and do very basic things, I feel comfortable on my board now! I have tried to Ollie and have been on many sites to find out how.. but they didn't seem to help! Is this because my board is cheap?? Do I need one of those decks with dips just before the nose/tail starts?! Can you tell me how to ollie?
And also.. what is the best way to stop?? I have tried stamping the tail down and dragging my heel and everything, but they don't work well if you are going really fast!

Thank you!

P.s you are very inspiring.. not many girls skate! n they should!
Laura
13/ England
Answer:
Hi Laura,
Thanks for the compliment.  I love skateboarding!
Sounds like you are on the road to success, so stick with it.  Ollie's take time, so be patient.  I can offer is a step by step also which is below, and tell you that it's really important to remember that you are moving forward so anticipate your motion forward when you ollie.
I don't know what kind of board you have, but we have great skateboards made especially for girls right here on the Cool Girl Deck website.  Christmas is coming soon, so maybe your parents will get you a new board!
I like to stop by putting my back foot down and dragging the toe.  That seems to work for a lot of other people too.
All the best to ya!!
Holly Lyons
The ollie:
1) Push at a comfortable speed, remember the faster you go the better the pop.
2) Place your front foot near the middle of your board, about two inches under your bolts. Put your back foot on the tail.
3) Squat, so you can spring yourself up.
4) Kick your back foot down so you can pop as you jump up, your front foot should rub upward on your grip tape.
5) Make sure you tuck your knees to your chest, picking up your back foot as well to level the board at a good height. REMEMBER you are jumping forward.
6) Then come down comfortably, both feet on the board. It will look better if both your feet are over the bolts as well as lessen the stress of impact
7) Finally bend your legs as you touch down to give it that smooth style and roll away stocked.
Question:
Hi there, my name is Kelsey, but you can call me Paris because I look like her. Any ways whenever I try to get on my skateboard I fall on my booty and I stress out and make myself look like a freak and I don't like to be called a freak. Please oh my golly goodness tell me how I can fix that. I'm so desperate! Let me tell you something: I like this really hot skater and I'm trying to impress him. Do you think it will work?
PS I need help!
Kelsey- aka Paris
15/ Raleigh, NC
Answer:
Hi Kelsey,
Well I think a person should skate because it is something they love to do and they love the feeling that skateboarding gives them.  It has nothing to do with anybody else.  With that said, if you want to get better, you just have to practice a lot, and in skateboarding you will fall a lot too.  It comes with the territory.  Don't worry about how you look, you have to skate because it's your thing.
As for the guy, I can't speak for him, so I don't know if it will impress him.  I bet if you get good at skating it will though, so maybe try finding another girl that you can learn to skate with and not feel dumb in front of.  Then when you get better you will have the confidence to skate in front of the guy you like.
Good luck,
Holly Lyons
Question:
Hi my name is Calli and im 12 years old and really want to learn how to skate but my parents don't think I can do it do you have any advice for a girl who wants to learn?
Calli
12/ Washington
Answer:
Hi Calli,
My best advice is to show your parents the Cool Girl Decks website.  They will see that we have girls on our team that range from 6 years old and up.  You're 12 and that's the perfect age to skateboard.  Maybe they just don't know that girls can skate too, so you just have to help them and open their eyes to how fun skating is.
Good luck and I hope they will let you skate!
Holly Lyons
Question:
My name is Ali and I just started skateboarding because the guy I like at school skates. I can skate forward and turn and go down hills, but I need a REAL skateboard (what is the best kind?) and need to know the fastest easiest most pain-free way to learn tricks I know the names of a few tricks but my parents aren't up for taking me to a skate park so I only skate in my neighborhood any tips or advice for me?
Ali
PA
Answer:
Hi Ali,
The best skateboards for girls are Cool Girl Decks.  They are made especially for girls, and they're super cute too.
There's no easy pain-free way to learn to skateboard.  Skating isn't easy, and that's what makes it so gratifying. With that said, you just have to go for and when you learn anything you have to practice a lot to get good.  Maybe try to find another girl who wants to learn with you, then it's more fun and not so intimidating.
Since you have to skate in your neighborhood, I think it's best to just start rolling around, tic tacking, and after you get comfortable of your skateboard, start learning to ollie.  That is a trick that opens the doors to so many other tricks.  Learn to ollie off curbs and then up curbs.  After that you can learn kick flips and lots of other board tricks.
Good luck and have fun!
Holly Lyons
Question:
Hey I'm brand new to this, haven't even got my board sorted out yet, I'm feeling quite unconfident cos my guy friends skate but I feel like I'm going to embarrass myself. Any tips on getting rid of nerves?
Kate
18/ North Yorkshire, England
Answer:
Hi Kate,
Well, the only way to get rid of the nerves is to get yourself a skateboard (a Cool Girl Deck) and just to go out and do it! I know it's hard, but try to not think about other people, focus on what you want to learn and have fun. Skateboarding is not easy, and that's why it's so rewarding. Maybe skate by yourself or with another girl so it's not so intimidating while you're learning. Then once you've built up your confidence, you will have fun skating with the guys.
Good luck and stick with it!
Holly Lyons
Question:

Oh Btw are you going to be at the Huntington Beach games because if you are I'll be there and I'll be looking forward to all the girl pros skating!
Thx,
Masami
13/ Palos Verdes, California
Answer:
Hi Masami,
Sorry it has taken me so long to reply. I have been out of town a lot this summer. You are super young and it sounds like you are already really good, so I definitely think you can be as great of a skater as you want to be. It's important to skate simply because you love to do it, then no matter what happens, you're happy.
Good luck and again it sounds like you are on a road to success!
Holly Lyons

Question:
Hey Holly,
We met briefly when you were in Tempe, AZ last year. You video taped my son jumping the "flaming skull" ramp on his bike. Anyway, I was wondering about the video you shot of him and if there is anyway for me to get a copy. I heard it has been playing on Fuel TV but we don't get that cable station. Any help you could give me in obtaining a copy would be great.
Charlene

Answer:
Hi Charlene,
That was so cool what your son did.  I don't know how to get a hold of the guys, but check the internet for "GKA on Fuel TV".  Hopefully there is an e-mail address and you can get through to someone.  Good luck!
All the best,

Its me Domino again. Ive been trying so hard to get nollie to boardslide but can never come off the rail. I've also tried nollie flips down small stair sets (like 4 or 5) but whenever I try the board hits the last step... I guess I'm not getting enough speed, but the flat in front of the stairs is short. How do I get enough speed to nollie flip those stairs?

Hi Domino,
Sounds like you need to find a place where you can get more speed to start from.
Good luck,

Hi this is the first time I've seen this its soo pink lol I don't know any girls that skate and I hate skating alone do u know what I could 2 to get myself to skate alone..?
Kim
15/ The Netherlands
Answer:
Hi Kim,
Maybe see if any of your female friends want to learn how to skate.  I skate with guys all the time and that is really fun too.  So, maybe skate with the guys.  If you have to skate alone, just remember why you skate, because you love to.  Also, give yourself some goals and stick to them.  That may help.
Good luck to ya!

Question:
How did your mom feel about it was she cool with it or what was her reaction. An when did you get your board.
Jasmine
11/ Lexington N.C.
Answer:
Hi Jasmine,
I have always played sports my whole life, so my Mom was cool with it.  It was the early to mid nineties though, and the style was really baggy clothes.  My Mom hated that I wore such big baggy boys clothes.
I can't remember when I got my first board, it was a long time ago though.  I think it was in '93.
Holly Lyons
Question:
Well I recently started learning how to skate and I have my friends board, the thing is, that I don't have enough money to get myself a board and neither do my parents. What should I do?..also how long does it take (usually) to learn how to do a 360?
Fab
14/ CA
Answer:
Hi Fab,
I guess see if your friend has an old board they can give you.  Tricks take longer for some people than another, so I can't say how long it will take you to learn how to do a 360.  Keep at it though, and have fun!
Best wishes,
Holly Lyons

If you are first starting out, it is easier to go slow so that you can get comfortable and build your confidence   Then it's easier when you are going faster and looks more stylish.

Question:
Hey ... I've been skating since well I dnno probly about 4 or maybe 5 years and I've decided now that I'm gunna practise every day and so for the last few weeks I've been out the front for at least 15-20 mins trying to teach my self tricks. I taught myself how to ollie (although it isn't very high!) and well I can manual a bit but I'm not very good. My question is how long did you skate for before you came pro? Also in one of the other readders questions- your answer said you used to go to car parks when the shops were shut with friends.. Well I'm only 13 turning 14 in November and well none of my friends can skate! WHAT NOW!? lol please reply thanks luv from olivia (p.s i think your really good skater and ur really pretty too!)
Liv (olivia)
13 turning 14/ Australia-Brisbane
Answer:
HI Liv,
I have been skating since the early to mid nineties.  And, I started entering pro skateboard contests in 2001.

I don't know what you should do about your friends not skating.  Maybe if they try it they will like it, or look around your school and see if there is anybody else that skates.  I know what it feels like to have nobody to skate with, but remember you love to skate and it's for yourself.  So, stick with it no matter what, and I'm sure somewhere down the road you will make some great friends that will skate with you.
Best wishes!

Question:
How do you axle stall and get air?
Holly
10/ Papillion, Nebraska
Answer:
Hi Holly,
Cool name!  You axle stall by going up the ramp and waiting till your back trucks hit the coping and then turn your upper body and put your front trucks on the coping.  Now you are doing an axel stall.  Then turn in and ride away.
You get air by going up the ramp, lifting your front wheels off the wall, bonk off your back wheels, and then grab your board.  Bring the board to your hand.  Hope this makes sense.
Good luck and keep at it!

Question:
Hi, I am starting to learn how to skate street and was wondering what size deck I should buy?
Paige
13/ Mississippi
Answer:
Hi Paige,
A good deck for street skating and since you are 13, would be a 7.25 or a 7.5 inch board.  We have some great boards here at Cool Girl Decks made especially for girls, so check them out!
Holly Lyons
Question:
Hi Holly,
I've been interested in skateboarding for awhile, but I have started because of a weight problem. So I was wondering, does it matter of you weight and if so are there special boards or certain boards made for bigger girls?
Jemishia
16/ Sanford, FL
Answer:
Hi Jemishia,
I have met people of all sizes that can skateboard, so no you can work with your weight.  Therefore, go for it and skateboard!  There are wider boards available.  Just check on-line, but I know guys that are over 6 ft. and 200 pounds.  They tend to ride 8 1/4" or 8 1/2" boards, with a longer wheel base.
Have fun!

Question:
HI HOLLY, Is it hard to get sponsored? By an up and coming female skater.
p.s U R AWSOME!!!
Amanda
10/ Sussex, NJ
Answer:
Hi Amanda,
Well, I've always liked to compete, so it wasn't hard for me. If you want to get sponsored, my best advice would be to enter some contests and do well in them.  Or you could put all your best tricks onto a DVD.  Then contact companies that you want to skate for and see what they have to say.
Best wishes,
Holly Lyons

Thanks for the nice comment.  You're never to old to learn something new, and 16 is not too old at all to learn how to skateboard.  It sounds like you're already very athletic, and with the passion that you have for skateboarding, I'm sure you will be good at it.  The most important thing is to have fun.
Good luck to you!

Answer:
Hi Ella,
Skateboarding takes time, so stick with it and be patient.  Keep working on your ollie too, it will get higher.  I skate vert and bowls mostly and not street, so I've never checked to see how high I ollie.  Good luck to you and have fun on your skateboard!

Question:
What kind of skateboard is that, and aren’t you scared you might fall off ?

Answer:
Hi Sophany,
My skateboard is a Cool Girl Deck and they are made especially for girls!
I fall off my skateboard all the time, it's just part of skateboarding. It's not scary as long as you know how to fall. Start with learning the basics and also learn how to fall, so you are not scared. Have fun with skateboarding, it's the best!

Question:
Hey Holly,
My name is Krissy. I’m just learning how to skateboard but i want to learn and be one of the best real fast...but how?! I know its hard but guys are always asking me to skateboard with them and they are always showing off awesome new tricks, but I don’t know any tricks to show off...i want to start with something simple then quickly work my way up! Can you please help me?!

Answer:
Hi Krissy,
Unfortunately, skateboarding is not easy, but it's so rewarding because it is difficult. My best suggestion is to start off with an ollie which I have a step by step for you below. Also, watch other people and see tricks that you could see yourself learning. Again, skateboarding is not easy, and you are not going to be really good, really fast. Have fun with skateboarding though, and keep trying, skateboarding takes a lot of practice, and it's the best feeling ever!
Here is how you ollie:
1) Push at a comfortable speed, remember the faster you go the better the pop.
2) Place your front foot near the middle of your board, about two inches under your bolts. Put your back foot on the tail.
3) Squat, so you can spring yourself up.
4) Kick your back foot down so you can pop as you jump up, your front foot should rub upward on your griptape.
