Surf Stronger w/ Serena Brooke
by Avra K.

Pro surfer Serena Brooke wants you to surf longer and stronger.  Her workout dvd, “Surf Stronger,” lets you train with ‘one of the fittest surfers on the planet,’ otherwise known to her friends as Sauce.  At the U.S. Open, Serena talked to Cool Girls about the video, which took six months to film.  “My friends say it’s hard,” she admits, “but good!”  For Serena, the effort is worth the results: “When you’re feeling fitter, you’re definitely more confident.”

Of course Serena skates a Cool Girls' deck.

Serena’s very friendly and seems like a great person.  She’s also part of an elite group of athletes:  the top female surfers on the planet.  I didn’t know how strong surf pros had to be until I tried this workout.  If you’re ready for a challenge, this is it!  Although the exercises will definitely be easier for serious athletes, beginners and less fit people can start by adapting the pace and number of reps to their ability level.  Scott Adams, the surfer/fitness pro who designed the dvd, suggests starting with the Quick Core workout and working your way up to the Main Core exercises.

My favorite thing about Surf Stronger is that, for two of the three workouts, you don’t need any special equipment.  All you need is a good attitude and determination.  You can do your Warm Ups on the beach and the Quick Core workout anywhere you can lie down comfortably.  Here’s everything you need to know:

WARM-UPS:   Do these right before you hit the ocean:  (post-jog, pre-surf)

SHORT REPORT:  Hard, fast-paced exercises.

FOCUS:  Shoulders and especially hips

SUMMARY:  This segment stars Scott, who says, “longer held, slower stretches tend to slow down your reaction time and that’s the last thing you want when you’re paddling out.”  Instead, you need “dynamic movement.”  That means, get going!

:::::::::::::::::::

QUICK CORE WORKOUT:  10 minutes

SHORT REPORT:  Oww!  If you want killer abs like Serena, get them here.

FOCUS:  Crunches, back extensions, push-ups, jack-knifes, side planks, etc.

SUMMARY:  Rotating Push-ups . . . Need I say more?!

::::::::::::::::::::::

MAIN CORE WORKOUT:   28 minutes

SHORT REPORT:  I just watched in awe!

EQUIPMENT:  A stability ball and mat

SUMMARY:  Actually, I did try a few of the main core exercises – for the sake of truth in journalism -- and the stability ball helps a lot.  It seems to absorb the impact of the exercises, which makes them more fun.

:::::::::::::::::::::::

Alright, time to stop reading and start repping.  Final words of inspiration from Serena: “What drives me?  The desire to better myself, in life in general, whether it’s fitness or personal or career.  Just to evolve as a person and better myself.”  If you want to better your surfing, Surf Stronger’s a good place to start.

Hungry Girl
-Lisa Lillien
gry Girl is the cherry on top

Now this is what I call a cookbook.  Hungry Girl: Recipes and Survival Strategies for Guilt-Free Eating in the Real World, stemmed from the incredibly successful website, Hungry-Girl.com, launched by Lisa Lillien in 2004.  The Hungry Girl craze began with a newsletter about one of Lillien’s passions—eating—offering up guilt-free versions of her favorite indulgences so she and her readers could eat their hearts out.  Lillien has put together a fun low-cal cookbook in response to the overwhelming demand she received for her recipes from her nearly 1⁄2 million subscribers.

Hungry Girl presents with a fun and sassy style, definitely catering to her female readers, rather than the dull content typically seen in a diet-type cookbook (who wants to read those anyway?).  Branded just like the Hungry Girl website, just flipping through the book is fun!  HG is a collection of 165 recipes and survival strategies.  The recipes are simple, easy to make and—this is key—the recipes are short which is a definite plus for a lazy chef like me.  With fresh and cheeky titles to old favorites, cooking is actually fun!

The whole idea is to use replacement ingredients low in calories and fat, without sacrificing taste.  The book offers advice for what ingredients to buy and avoid and nutritional information is included with each recipe.  An added bonus to HG are the “survival strategies” for eating out at restaurants, parties, dealing with everyday cravings and more—I mean who else is going to give you the head’s up for how to “survive a trip to Starbucks”?  HG includes some truly practical tips that you can implement every day.

Written with the characteristic Hungry Girl sass, the cookbook delivers exactly what it promises—strategies for eating in the real world—and it’s topped with humor and style, making it actually enjoyable to use and read.

Check out the HG website at www.hungry-girl.com for more info or to become one of HG’s subscribers.  Lillien also appears regularly on Extra, People’s Style Watch, Yahoo.com, and writes a weekly column for WeightWatchers.com.  And don’t forget to pick up your copy of Hungry Girl—in bookstores now!
